The film is based on real events that occurred from the first atomic Soviet submarine, which had suffered an accident due to problems in the atomic reactor in 1961. K-19 is a visible evidence of the heroism of Russian sailors who served in this submarine. The film demonstrates the heroism of Captain Alexei Vostrikov, who, in the midst of the Cold War, assumes the command of the K-19 atomic submarine instead of its first captain Mikhail Golovin.
