James is a British writer, comes to Italy at a conference dedicated to the problem of originals and copies in art. There he meets a Frenchwoman, the owner of the art gallery, who pretends that the writer is her often absent husband. The writer plays along with a charming woman, but this innocent game soon becomes dangerous.
