The main character of the film is Leopold Sokha, a working city collector, and a small thief part -time. When the Nazis occupy Lviv, he accidentally encounters a group of Jews trying to escape from sending to the ghetto. For a monetary reward, he hides the fugitives in the maze of underground utilities of the city. What begins as a cynical business agreement gradually develops into something much more. During this time, when for 14 months women, men and children experience fate, deceiving the faithful death, Leopold`s heart is imbued with a sense of compassion for these unfortunate people.
