Tony Takitani had a lonely childhood. Loneliness was a normal state for him, since his mother died a young, and his father, who spent all the time with his jazz organ, was never at home. At school, Tony studied art, but although his drawings were accurate and full of details, they lacked feelings. Tony is used to being self-sufficient and, it seems, considers emotions to be somewhat illogical and infantile. After he found his true calling in a technical illustration, he falls in love with Aiko - one of the clients, which is obsessed with high fashion. Ultimately, he marries her, and his life is changing. He feels the beating of the pulse of life and for the first time understands what loneliness is, and begins to be afraid of it. But he is worried about Aiko’s manic passion for clothes from famous designers. When he asks her to be more economical, the consequences are tragic. Tony again alone, he sits near his wife’s closet, looking at such dear fashion dresses - whispering ghosts of her soul. Ultimately, Tony puts an announcement in the newspaper that he is looking for a woman of perfect proportions ...
