Anna and Franz lived in a small German city, were young, in love with each other and were going to get married. But in the quiet happiness of two, a big crazy world intervened-the First World War was going on, Franz was sent to the front to France, where he, a 23-year-old violinist, adored Verlaine`s poems, died. The war ended, and Anna`s life was now reduced to the support of older parents of her beloved and visits to the cemetery. Once there, she sees a stranger who brought flowers to the grave of Franz. He, Adrien, is a Frenchman, and, therefore, the enemy. But a meeting with him turns her life.
