Young Inga lives in an orphanage with her little friend Emile. The shelter is controlled by the cruel Madame Landsfrid, who makes children work in order to provide her with a comfortable life. On Christmas Eve, Inga, along with other children, goes to the city square to sell matches, but joyful townspeople in the foreboding of the holiday pass by freezing children. Those few money that Inge managed to earn, she gave to Emil so that the boy would not be punished. Staying in the night square, the girl with matches continued to wait until someone will not take pity on her and buy her goods.
