The writer Clive Langham on the eve of the 78th anniversary spends a sleepless night in torment, trying to forget about pain with alcohol and literary imagination. He composes in the imagination his last novel, whose heroes are his relatives: his dear son and illegitimate, his wife, who committed suicide seven years ago, beloved sons. The writer who does not care about the fidelity of reality, as it were, plays the role of providence, controlling the heroes like puppets.
