1949, Santa Rosa, California. The silent hairdresser Ed Crane is leisurely cutting customers in his salon, while his wife twists shashni with her boss, a Galanterer with a big Dave, who recently accumulated money for a new store. Suddenly, Ed falls out the opportunity to get rich in the emerging business of chemical cleaning of clothing. To acquire capital, he blackmail the Big Dave, realizing that he can achieve success in life only by going to extreme measures. It seems that there are no flaws in the sly intention of Ed. However, he soon learns that, having made this fatal decision, he signed his death sentence.
