The action takes place in the 19th century in a Japanese village, affected by hunger. In order not to die a starvation, residents introduced the ritual of the killing of useless members of the community: newborn boys simply killed, and their own children took the elderly to the top of the Narayama Mountain and left to die. Orin - a woman of 69 years old should die. Her son does not want to perform a ritual, but that mother, faithful tradition, requires that. Having found wives to her children, she begins the last climb to the top tied to the back of her son.
