The Magdalene Sisters
The Magdalene Sisters
Magdalene shelters in Ireland were kept by sisters of mercy under the auspices of the Catholic Church. Getting here from families or orphans, young girls found themselves in conditions close to imprisonment. The hard work in the laundry rooms had to atone for their sins. A sin that deserves such an atonement could become anything: motherhood outside of marriage or too frank beauty. Or equally defiant ugliness. Either stupidity, or mind, or misfortune to become a victim of violence and have the imprudence of telling about it. For these sins, they worked for free 364 days a year, half -starved, subjected to bodily punishment and humiliation. They were raped, and they were taken away from their children. This conclusion was unlimited. Thousands of women spent their lives and died here. The last shelter of Magdalene in Ireland closed in 1996. This film was shot on behalf of four such girls, and its action takes place in the 60s, a time that is mistakenly perceived by some as an era of final female liberation.
