1877. Eight -year -old Pelle, the son of an elderly farm lass of Karlson, moves with his father from Sweden to Denmark on an emigrant ship. Here he lives on a peasant farm, joining the difficulties of the world - to bright and vile, kind and terrible, touching and insignificant. He passes through attachment and pain, disappointment and love, receives knowledge in a local school for the poor and the first lessons of social struggle in the hope of once leaving and conquer someone else`s world.
