The professor family lives in a secluded picturesque corner of Sweden. Alexander is a former actor, writer, his wife - a young actress, his children - a daughter and a dumb son (“little man”), experience the torment and horrors of an approaching end of the world, in connection with the outbreak of an atomic war. Alexander has a birthday. But it can also become a common day of death, as nuclear missiles have already been launched. Alexander concludes a pact with God ... What should be sacrificed to save the world from an impending disaster? With your property, your way of life, and, perhaps, your life? What will the hero of the film on the altar of the omnipotent creator put, if the latter, of course, exists? “The film is done specifically in such a way as to be interpreted differently,” Tarkovsky himself wrote about him.
