The action of the movie is deployed in 1916 on the Western Front. Colonel Dax commands the infantry regiment of the French army. For two years now, the allies have been trying to turn the course of the war with the Germans. The head of the corps, General Brulard, orders the divisional General Miro to attack the impregnable enemy position, nicknamed the ant hill. The failure of the operation was obvious initially, but when the attack ended in complete failure, the general ordered to judge and shoot for the cowardice of three people. Colonel Dax tried in vain to protect the soldiers who were chosen arbitrarily. They gave their lives to cover the stupidity and ambitions of the authorities ...
