The film takes place in the United States during the Civil War. The American Army Lieutenant John Dunbar, after being wounded in battle, asks him to transfer him to a new place of service closer to the western border of the United States. The place of his service is distant a small fort. His direct commander committed suicide, and the fellow traveler Dunbar died in a skirmish with the Indians after he brought the hero to the destination. People who know that Dunbar was left alone in the fort and should survive in conditions of severe nature, and in the neighborhood with the seemingly inhospitable indigenous inhabitants of North America, simply did not remain.
