The historical epic of Henrik Senkevich, covering the events of the XVII century of the War of the Commonwealth with the Swedes. The relations of the main characters of Andrzej Kmitits and Olenka Billevich are difficult to develop. By the will of the fate of the Kmititz, it is connected by an oath with the apostate hetman. He finds himself in the camp of enemies and is forced to fight against his own. Friends consider him a traitor, Olenka refuses him, and the Swedes glorify. Andrzhya falls on severe mental and physical suffering. But at the cost of his wounds, captivity, heroic exploits, he manages to regain his homeland, beloved and friends.
