Garpagon is a rather rich person, but characterized by painful stinginess. He buried his capital in the form of a chest of gold coins in his garden and strictly makes sure that his treasure was not found from the household. Not only his servants who are forced to wear rags and work for two, but also his children, suffer from his stinginess. He intends to marry his daughter to Eliza to marry the rich old man Anselm only because he is ready to abandon the attached. For his son Cleant, he found a middle -aged widow in his wife. Meanwhile, the hearts of young people are already belonging to others: Eliza loves Valera, a descendant of a noble family who once saved her life and, having loved her, hired a manager to her father, hiding his origin. Kleant is in love with young Mariana, a poor girl living together with her mother. Not hoping for his father’s understanding, the children of Garpagon decide to arrange their fate themselves, without his consent. Eliza secretly engaged to Valer, and Kleant decides to take money from the usurer to marry Mariana, when suddenly it turns out that Garpagon himself intends to marry her and already instructed the matchmaker to agree with the girl’s mother. The situation is saved by the servant of Kleanth Laflesh, who discovers the harpagon chest and hires him to make the buccum marry his son to Mariana.
