Harvey Pekar works as a clerk in the hospital. The only thing that saves him from everyday routine is endless discussions with colleagues, everything is discussed: from the music and the decline of American culture up to new flavors for the preparation of jelly and life as such. At home he listens to jazz, reads books and writes for the soul. His apartment is breaking from books and records, the collection of which he replenishes, regularly strolling around the shops. Additional joy is brought to him by purchases at cheap sales. At the next flea market, he meets Robert Kramb - a congratulatory artist and a connoisseur of music. When years later, Kramb receives worldwide fame for his underground comics, inspired by his success, Harvey decides to create his own comic book brand. The true fan of realist writers, Harvey creates his `American splendor`: a true description of the life of the working class, his own unpleasant portrait. For the first time published in 1976, comics bring him real glory. In the 80s, his genuine comic book, Jois Barber, became the true comrade-in-arms of Harvey. They fully feel the bizarre consequences of their popularity ...
