The action takes place after the Second World War. Wilson, a federal agent, receives the task of finding Franz Kindler, one of the organizers of the genocide of the Jewish people. The traces bring him to the sleepy university town of Hartford in Connecticut, where, as he suspects, Kindler is hiding under the name of Professor Charles Rankin.
