A large -scale film adaptation of Paul Gallico novel begins on New Year`s Eve at the Luxurious Ocean Liner `Poseidon`, which is coming from America to Greece. The celebration is interrupted by a sudden blow of a giant wave caused by a close underwater earthquake. Water collapses onto the ship and turns it upside down. A small handful of people, led by a priest, miraculously manages to get into compartments, not yet filled with water. Passengers will have to survive a few terrible hours in a tense struggle for survival before they again see the light of the sun.
