London gangster Jack Carter comes to his native Newcasl in the north of England for the funeral of his brother Frank. According to the police, the brother pretty drank and got into a car accident. Carter, however, believes that his brother was killed, and begins his own investigation. Almost immediately, he meets a tough rebuff from the local mafia, which wants to either send him back to London, or remove the crankcase.
