The film talks about the struggle for the survival of two black brothers and their sisters on the `dirty` streets of Manhattan. Hugh, the eldest, jazzist, looks after Ben and Lily, and both of the last can completely go down for the whites, which they do. More dark-skinned than his younger brother and sister, Hugh is gradually embittered due to the limited opportunities caused by the color of his skin.
