The film talks about the struggle for the survival of two black brothers and their sisters on the `dirty` streets of Manhattan. Hugh, the eldest, jazzist, looks after Ben and Lily, and both of the last can completely go down for the whites, which they do. More dark-skinned than his younger brother and sister, Hugh is gradually embittered due to the limited opportunities caused by the color of his skin. His artistic abilities and potential are spent in vain in eatery and strip clubs, where he is forced to play on the pipe in order to earn at least food. Meanwhile, Lilia is hanging out with the pretentious art might of New York, having fun and flirts over. She converges with Tony, a young white youth, and loses her virginity. However, when Tony finds out that Lilia is a mulatto, he throws her. Ben leads a carefree life, sticking out with his friends Tom and Dennis. They drink, walk and constantly fall into trouble. One night, three friends get involved in a cruel street fight ...
