The film takes place in the 1840s in New York. Katherine lives with his father, Dr. Styoper. Her mother died a few years before, and Dr. Slopper constantly compares her daughter with her, not in favor of the first. Katherine meets Maurice Toount, a beautiful, but windy young man, and after a while he makes her an offer. Dr. Slopper is sure that he wants to marry her because of the inheritance and opposes their marriage.
