The action takes place in a privileged private school in Edinburgh of the 1930s. Teacher Gene Brody leads a class at a Scottish school for girls, but instead of traditional courses, he tells them the tragic story of his first love, and then conducts classes `in truth, good and beauty.` Colleagues are hung up against Miss Brody, but schoolgirls stand for their teacher with a mountain. Miss Brody, having assured his own infallibility, enters into a love affair with the teacher of drawing Teddy Lloyd and music teacher Gordon Lotyr and, in addition to everything, openly expresses approval of the order and discipline prevailing in fascist countries. The students change their attitude towards her, call them `funny old maiden`, and one of them, Sandy, leads the director to dismiss Brody for dangerous political views.
