The American grandmaster Emmett Clayton is nervous before the match with the Soviet chess player Tomlin Dudek. He suspects that the upcoming duel will cost him a champion title. Therefore, Clayton invents an incredibly confusing story about fatal love, lures a compassionate Russian to his room, and meanwhile he prepares a murder. But still, Clayton is destined to be disgraced. Dudek does not die, and recovering from injuries, can testify to the one who is called Colombo.
