The city businessman Yusheng returns to his native village in North China to the funeral of his father, a rural teacher. During the funeral, mother Luo wants to observe all ancient customs, despite the fact that times have changed and people live in a new way. However, Yusheng believes that the opinion of the parent must be respected, and decides to fulfill all her wishes. On the day of the funeral, a hundred students of the late teacher gathered in the cemetery, and then Yusheng recalls the most cherished desire of his father - he wanted his son to teach children in a rural school.
