Ukraine, the thirties. American engineer Michael Shemrok, together with his son, comes to Kharkov to help build socialism. Here he falls in love with actress Olga Levitskaya, on whom the Red Commissioner had long laid his eyes. Under tragic circumstances, the American dies, and his son saves a blind kobzar from the pursuers. Without other chances to survive in a foreign land, the guy becomes a guide. Their journey, full of dangerous adventures, occurs against the backdrop of the dramatic pages of Ukrainian history and the destruction of human destinies.
