50s. A small town in Texas. Dwayne Jackson and Sonny Crawford - `stars` of a local school football team. Dwayne is aggressive, and Sonny is quiet and sensitive. They are best friends. The plot is spinning almost imperceptibly, detailing the relationship between the inhabitants of the town. The mentally retarded boy Billy lives in the town, the regulars of the local cinema are cruelly mocking him and make fun of him, in which there are cafes and a billiard room belonging to Sam Leo, a former cowboy, an idol adored by all boys. Sonny stands up for Billy and becomes his defender. And then - a friend and lover Ruth Popper, suffering from the loneliness of the wife of a school coach of a basketball team. Sonny and Dwayne go for a short while in Mexico, where they arrange stormy party, and upon their return, the sad news awaits them.
