New times` are emotional, designed in a comic manner, a response to distortions of the machine era. A little tramp does not want to be a “cog” in a huge mega-machine of industrial production and so similar to it of human society. Charlie fights with stupid rich people, omnipotent police, soulless chiefs of conveyor production. Sometimes he wins in these battles, but more often loses, in the end, fearlessly goes towards dawn. Although `New times` is considered the last dumb film by Charlie Chaplin, it has a small tramp for the first and last time found a voice. True, he did not speak, but sang in the final shots of the picture, symbolizing farewell to the excellent period of silent cinema.
