The Mennonites, in the community of which the film takes place, settled in North Mexico at the end of the century before last, but since their religion prohibits marriages with Gentiles, they managed to maintain ethnic purity and absolute cultural isolation. The hero of the picture is an exemplary husband and father of a large family, falls in love with the mistress of the cafe Marianne. An excessive burden of a moral dilemma falls on the shoulders of the pious Johan. Love for Marianne becomes the field of the battle of Divine and Devil.
