Saint-Louis. 1903. Alonso Smith, a successful businessman, lives with his wife Anne, daughters Esther, Tutie, Rose, Agnes, son of a bosom, a capricious grandfather and a servant. The daughter Rose flirts with one gentleman at home and corresponds with another who has left for college, and Esther is engaged to a boy living in a neighboring house. When Alonso receives a promotion and he needs to move to New York, which none of the family members want in any way, trouble begins.
