The plot is based on the life of the King of Bavaria Ludwig II, obsessed with the love of Wagner`s music and the construction of fairy -tale palaces and castles, its growing loneliness. In the interpretation of Visconti Ludwig (Helmut Berger) - not a madman, but the absolute monarch of the Middle Ages, who feels in captivity of the constitutional monarchy and the ceremonial court, was late to be born. The central female character is Empress Austria Elizabeth (Sissy), she is played by Romy Schneider who had already played in her role. The action in Ludwig develops slowly, but full of inner drama.
