Maximillian de Winter is a rich man who lost his wife about a year ago, Rebecca de Winter. He arrives in Monte Carlo, where Mrs. Van Hopper and her young companion meets. Gradually, Maximillian is so carried away by a young special that he will eventually marry her. Maximillian and the newly made Mrs. de Winter return to Manderly, the possession of the de Winter family in Cornwell. There, the girl begins to pursue and suppress the `presence` of Rebecca, which she finds in absolutely everything.
