The film takes place on the eve of World War II in Austria. A young girl named Maria, remaining an orphan, finds a shelter in a convent and is preparing to become a nun. However, by virtue of her love of life, she succeeds with it with difficulty, and the abbess of the monastery understands that such a way is not for her young novice. In this regard, she offers a governess in the family, consisting of an army officer, a patriot of her Fatherland, whose wife recently died and his seven children. Once in the house, Maria learns that she is no longer the first governess in this family, the head of the family will be closed, dry and grumped, and the children are unhappy and shy and do not let anyone in, grief about the mother and suffering from the coldness of her father. However, Maria manages to find a common language with children, and she understands that she fell in love with this officer, and he seems to be not indifferent to her. At the same time, after the next trip to Vienna, he brings another woman to the castle, introducing her as his bride.
