Dr. Malcolm Seyer, a shy doctor and scientist, uses experimental drugs to `awaken` immobilized victims of a rare disease. Leonard was the first patient to receive this irregular treatment. His awakening, filled with reverence, fear and enthusiasm, leads, as it were, to the second birth and Seier himself, as the patient reveals for himself and the doctor, simple joys of life. Encouraged by the wonderful recovery of Leonard, Seyer gives the medicine to other patients.
