Lyonel Essrog, a lonely private detective with a tourist syndrome, decides to begin the investigation of the murder of his mentor and only friend Frank Minna. He has only a few hooks and the power of reason obsessed with the goal to unravel a ball of carefully hidden secrets, which maintain the balance of forces in New York itself. The investigation leads him to Harlem jazz clubs, where Jin flows, the dangerous slums of Brooklyn and, finally, gilded halls of the political elite of the metropolis. He challenges the gangster, corruption and the most dangerous person in the city in order to cleanse the name of his friend and save a woman who can save him.
