The action took place in the 1920s in Copenhagen. The illustrator and artist Gerda Vegener asks his husband Einar Vegener to pose as a female model. Portraits are gaining popularity and Gerda continues to write paintings with her husband as a woman. Ainar likes his own female appearance and he begins to live under the name of Lily Elbe. Subsequently, Elbe becomes the first person who has passed the surgical correction of the floor.
